In the early 20th century, Italian farmers settled in the Sherwood area and prospered with bumper onion crops from the high water level in Sherwood fields. In a time when transporting foods was regionally limited, Sherwood gained dominance as the prime onion supplier for cities all along the Pacific Coast.

Sherwood owes much of its development to the onion, in fact Cipolla, as in Cipole Road, is Italian for onion, explained Dr. Ben Aanderud, Chairman of the 30th annual Sherwood Great Onion Festival.

New and better-than-ever talented individuals and community and school groups will also provide stage entertainment.

The Great Onion Festival menu includes a barbecue chicken dinner accompanied by a baked onion, baked beans and Cole slaw served up by the Sherwood Old Town Rotary Club and volunteers.

Onion aficionados are invited to prepare their best onion-inclusive recipe in Best Dang Onion Dish in Sherwood. A panel of local notables will judge the prepared onion dishes.

For young ones theres the onion rolling contest and pumpkin painting. The onion-eating contest is open to all brave souls. The Stinkiest Breath contest is also a favorite! Raffle prizes add a bit of chance to the day. Over 30 product, service and craft vendors will also be hosted at Onion Festival.
